The
declining years of life are often difficult ones. The
elderly suffer not just from disease and infirmity –
but also from loss and loneliness. The problem is particularly
severe for those in long-term care facilities who have
no outside relationships. Few people would guess that
as many as 60% of nursing home residents in some communities
never receive any visitors. Not surprisingly, their
isolation often leads to depression, despair, detachment
and even premature death. |
